COFFIN PROJECT DESIGN PROCESS

[ FOR NUIT BLANCHEDAY OF THE DEAD ]

It was strongly suggested that we design the coffin with used materials - which very much aligned with my creative practice and I really enjoyed working on this piece. The coffin was almost entirely made using discarded materials, everything was except for the studs and white embroidery thread. I borrowed the red thread and I already had scrap wire. I also actually used abandoned textiles that I found at the Coffin Factory when tenants were moving out, the black vinyl and red velour fabric. The red iridescent fabric and knives were secondhand materials from the thrift store. The muslin and other fabrics for samples were scrap pieces, even the paper that was used to trace the coffin to make the pattern was scrap from a printing company.
